Hazel Canyon House

Renovation of a 1960s coastal home overlooking Bolinas Lagoon in California.

The renovation transforms a 1960s bohemian coastal home perched on a steep ravine overlooking Bolinas Lagoon. It reimagines the classic coastal dwelling by enhancing its relaxed character while introducing abundant natural light and improved flow. The reoriented interior staircase establishes a more intuitive connection within the home, and a new dormer invites daylight deep into the plan, framing views through the surrounding oak grove to the lagoons and Mt. Tamalpais.

Drawing inspiration from the ethos of Sea Ranch, California coast beach houses, and the artisan spirit of Bolinas, the design emphasizes simple forms and tactile materials. This approach fosters a strong connection to the outdoors, celebrating the natural beauty and craftsmanship inherent in the local culture. This results in a harmonious blend of classic coastal style and contemporary elements, seamlessly integrating the home with its natural surroundings.
