Originally designed by Al Bumgardner this residence was purchased by a globetrotting family who wanted to make Seattle their permanent home.

Having undergone several outdated remodels, the house was looking for a refresh that would reflect the storied lives of its new inhabitants while also holding reverence to the original architecture. Overlooking the Puget Sound, enhancing territorial views became a dominant part of SHED’s approach. An emphasis on transparency became paramount, with the goal being to enhance and frame the view throughout the multiple layers of the main living spaces. The original material palette contrasted with playful selections made in collaboration with the owners became central to the project’s overall material strategy.
